Blagdon Lake

This seemed the perfect place to visit on a cold windy wintery day. There is a free car park next to the fire station, and it’s then a 30 minute walk down the hill to get to the lake. Luckily there was an organised group that got out of a mini bus in the car park, so guessing they were also heading to the lake, we just followed them. Though to be honest, as long as you head down the hill, I don’t think you can really go too far long, the lake is at the bottom, and you’ll get there eventually no matter which route you choose.

I made this short video of some of the scenes, one of the things I learnt for next time, is that a tripod is a must, I tried holding as still as possible, but with a dog and a baby, holding it still enough is too much to ask.

I would really like to start making more videos like this, as I really enjoyed shooting these little clips around the lake.

When it comes to video, I really don’t know what I am doing. A great example of this is I always have my images set to black & white in camera, as I find it easier to compose images, and manually focus. But because I’m shooting in raw, I stil get the full colour images when I import them to my computer. I assumed it would be the same with video – but as I learned when I imported them, that is not the case – so lesson learned.

The video shooting formats for video are pretty baffling, after having a quick google I found this really useful blog, which goes through all the options in a way that is great for a beginner like me. The accepted advice seems to be to record in XAVC – 4K, that way I’m recording in the maximum quality, and I can always scale it down later if I don’t need all that resolution, and I want a file size that isn’t absolutely enormous.

Hopefully now that winter is coming and to an end, I can get out to more new places, and take some more photos, and maybe a few videos as well. Hopefully now that winter is coming and to an end, I can get out to more new places, and take some more photos, and maybe a few videos as well.
